Overview
Toothbrush Adventure is a series of oral health products, including toothbrushes, cups and smart mirror applications, designed for the IP of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

INTRODUCTION
Background
With the increase of age, oral health problems have become a major health killer that bothers people. Studies have shown that developing healthy tooth brushing habits during adolescence will efficiently reduce the risk of oral diseases during future adulthood.However, today's adolescents care little about oral health.
Only 43.6% of teenagers have the habit of brushing their teeth twice a day in the morning and evening
Design Opportunity
67.2% of teenagers report that they have never received systematic oral health education
After conducting preliminary research on competing smart toothbrushes in the market, we found the following market gaps:
First, the product has not been able to convey schematic semantics to a reasonable level, and lack real-time feedback and correction of tooth brushing actions;
Second, the modeling design tends to be homogenous, lack of connotative semantic expression, novelty and deep meaning.

We decided to design an innovative smart toothbrush product for teenagers.which, in terms of extensional semantics, naturally guides users to develop the correct habit of brushing teeth, and in terms of connotative semantics, improves users’ enthusiasm for brushing teeth, and then Make the user's oral health guaranteed.

Products on the market are either targeted at children or adults, there exists a market gap for those catering to teenagers' taste, which leaves a great market opportunity.

User Experience
Some of the competitive products use sounds and lights as feedback to users' actions, which creates a fluent user experience process but is incomplete in feedback functions.
A tiny minority of the products have tried to use apps for real time guidance and after time summary, which is however rigid and boring. Moreover, the whole progress lacks fluency and naturalness, bringing bad using experience to users.
Methods should be found to both build efficient guidance and bring natural user experience process.
The over-detailed DIY mode adjustment system brings more trouble other than convenience to users.

Inspiration
After getting the design intent of real time guidance during the tooth-brushing process, I investigated several kinds of technologies and media forms that might be able to be employed to the interaction of my design. The conclusion can be seen as follows.

Other than touching, smart mirror interface provides an opportunity of more kinds of interaction forms such as gesture and sound, making the interaction process more fluent and natural.
The unique characteristic of mirror makes tracking and display of portrait play an important role, which helps to guide users more vividly and accurately.

Compared to traditional phone interface, the larger field of vision provides a brand new platform for AR technology.
Design Method ---- Narrative Design of Adventure Story
We decided to adopt the design concept of narrative design to unify the product and interface into an adventure story, so as to arouse empathy among users and make users feel the importance and mission of brushing their teeth for health protection, and then Inspire users' enthusiasm for brushing teeth.
Cut-in Point ---- Sense of Ceremony
We grasped the theme of the narrative design of adventure games. After reviewing the previous research, we decided to create the sense of ceremony while taking the toothbrush before brushing as the starting point of the design, and try to combine the semantic narrative and modeling style of the adventure game to design our products.

Interaction&Modeling ---- the Sword in the Stone
Grasping this inspiration, we thought of an element --------- the sword in the stone. The sword in the stone originated from the legend of King Arthur, and has since spawned countless related fictional creations in various fields. The most famous one is probably the master sword of the Legend of Zelda series.
When it is uprooted by the protagonist in the story, it often symbolizes the coming of the mission and the beginning of an epic grand narrative. Therefore, we decided to evolve the process of taking the toothbrush into an interactive form of pulling out the sword in the stone, bringing a sense of ritual, fun and motivation to the design of the toothbrush.

After interviewing some teenagers and their parents, I found that such a look is too offensive, which is not good for the mental health of the teenagers, and at the same time arouses the concerns of the parents and reduces the desire to buy.Moreover, the modeling is still not appealing enough to the teenagers.
Thus, I decided to seek for another direction of my design.

Therefore, we decided to change the direction, strip the sword out of the shape, and completely use the action of drawing the sword to carry the symbolic meaning of the sword in the stone, and to express the semantic meaning of the toothbrush itself, directly to the design theme, to express the fun of the adventure game narrative , The epic sense and the story itself.
At the moment it was pulled out, it was a sword in the stone carrying a sense of mission; and when it was detached from the base, it turned into a corner of the world without any offensiveness, quietly telling an epic, and guiding users to it.

In terms of vertical deepening, in addition to the output we have established so far, we will extend the mouthwash cup, toothpaste and other related products to express the huge and magnificent world view of the Legend of Zelda through a series of products.
And after the multi-level packaging design, a gift-oriented and cultural-creative business model is formed, which gives the product higher collection value. In addition to guiding the healthy life of young users, it is at the beginning of each day and when they fall asleep. Circumstances, subtly help them develop a life attitude to enjoy life.

Horizontal expansion
In terms of horizontal deepening, we will explore more IP in the future, and eventually through the development of the cultural industry, we will bring our own epic stories in traditional or popular culture to more people.
In this project, we chose The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a cooperative IP to conduct my design practice. Thus,Take it as an example, how does the fantasy world tell itself? How can this self talk be projected into our product redesign?

The switch of the toothbrush adopts a the shape of the symbol of the game series "triangular power".
The fictitious text Sheikah in the game constitutes the rune representing the mainland "HYRULE" where the story takes place. The user can adjust the vibration intensity of the toothbrush by sliding the rune. The rune will lighten and fade with the characters and evolve from light gold to golden red as a feedback.
The charging port is built-in at the bottom, and the symbol of Sheikah Eye will flash when the battery is about to run out, reminding users to charge in time.
It is worth mentioning that we have made a unique interactive design on the switch of the bottom charging port cover, imitating the bounce of the Nintendo Switch game cassette when it is plugged in and unplugged and popped up, giving users a sense of intimacy and ritual.
In order to highlight the sense of drawing the sword when the toothbrush is taken out, the image of the sterilized base uses the visual elements of the master’s sword base in the game, which are connected and used magnetically

Character Image Design
We chose the characters of five heroes in the legend of Zelda, using a flat, RPG-like illustration style. The character image setting is generally consistent with the characters in the game, and some changes have been made to the accessories to cater to the theme of oral health, hoping to achieve a semantic redesign of the character, while retaining the emotional traction of the original game player and perfectly integrated into our own design.
This set of character visual design will be applied to a series of designs including interface design, series packaging and promotional materials.

Take the brush
When the user takes out the toothbrush, the smart mirror will automatically enter the toothbrushing application interface, showing the toothbrushing schedule for the week, and if the user has special needs, they can also customize the brushing method.
Squeeze the toothpaste
The fragmented time of squeezing toothpaste has also been applied to popularize oral health knowledge.
Brush the teeth
The somatosensory game will start automatically when the toothbrush switch is turned on. We use AR technology to track the user’s face, the movement and strength of the toothbrush in real time, and guide users to brush their teeth correctly and vividly.
Gargeling
The interface will summarize and feedback the brushing situation when rinsing the mouth and tidying up the toothbrushing appliances.
The moment the user puts the toothbrush back into the base, the sword falls into the rock. There is no need for any additional and deliberate interaction between the user and the interface. Relying on the Internet of Things and AR technology, we have realized a completely natural human-computer interaction.

So what do other peripheral products do? After investigating on all kinds of peripheral products of different IPs, I found that most of them just concentrate on the character images from the either anime or games, adding them onto the surface of different types of product such as cups and T-shirts, or simply make toys of them.
THus
Why not build a service to design peripheral products for anime, comic and game companies, expanding the field into daily products in terms of both the art elements, storyline and interaction ways?

Then, I explored different IPs in anime, comic and game fields, brainstorming the possible daily-used peripheral products getting elements from their art style, storyline and interaction ways to test my idea.
